Wind powered New England ski resort first in world

A ski report in New England, USA, has become the first in the world to be powered by a wind turbine.

From the beginning of this month, a small ski resort near Charlemont in New England has been fully powered by a giant wind turbine measuring 84m tall and generating 2.2 million KWh per year. The owners are even selling the surplus off to the local electricity grid.

Poy Schafer, the resort’s manager, calculates the new installation is making savings of 1,400 tons of greenhouse gas, equivalent to planting 85,000 trees every year. The project took three years to plan and cost around $3 million in total. Its success means the resort could become a model for others in the US.

The German firm involved, PowerWind, is very pleased, saying it will attempt to expand its coverage with other similar tourist businesses in the coming years. This is latest example of hotels and resorts’ awareness of the pulling power of a greener approach.

Environmentally concerned holidaymakers are sure to favour destinations where they can holiday with a clear conscience. Creative ideas have been the result, with conceptual ‘green’ artist Michael; Jantzen now designing wind and sun-powered hotels in both deserts and ski resorts, showcasing the use of green energy in luxury surroundings.

Last year, Crowne Plaza opened its new hotel in Copenhagen, claiming it to be the greenest hotel on the planet, using groundwater-based cooling and heating systems, solar panels covering the exterior of the building and even gym bikes hooked up to generators. Skal, the travel and tourism association, gave it first prize in their annual ecotourism awards.
