Wizz Air increasingly prominent in Poland

Wizz Air, East/Central Europe’s largest discount airline, has strengthened its position and prominence in Poland over the past year, according to the latest statistics. A total of 2.8 million passengers are believed to have traveled with Wizz Air either to or from destinations in Poland, which represents an increase of over 33% over figures from the previous year. Although Wizz Air does not yet dominate the majority of Poland’s discount travel market, the carrier appears to be moving in that direction. Currently, 35% of all low cost flights in the largest Central European country are operated by Wizz Air. Airline executives pointed out that the carrier will undergo further expansion later this year, with the establishment of new bases and hubs at several airports, as well as an increase to the number of flights offered on the busiest routes. The first new base to open this year will be in Poznan. If everything goes according to plan, the base will become operational as of January 31^st, 2008. Wizz Air currently has seven bases at Poland’s largest airports. The carrier has also confirmed that it will launch 12 new routes later this year. This expansion involves buying more aircraft and ensuring that these are used in a way that serves Polish travelers. Wizz Air has already added six new Airbus A-320 planes to its fleet and three out of these will be stationed in Gdansk, Katowice and Poznan. By December, a total of 12 planes will focus exclusively on serving Polish routes. The new planes and routes mean that the airline has increased its capacity by about 40%.
