Wizz Air purchases new Airbus plane and plans Croatia expansion

Wizz Air, Central Europe’s largest low-cost carrier has decided to purchase a new airplane from Airbus, in order to expand its fleet, as it continues to set up new routes and open bases in the region. The Hungarian-Polish airline, based near Budapest, will start operating several new flights to popular destinations in Croatia-especially along the Dalmatian coast–and it will use a new Airbus A-320 to serve these routes.  Wizz Air’s fleet is currently comprised of 18 Airbus planes, but the low cost carrier has already placed an order to buy up to 23 new aircraft from the European manufacturer. As with all airlines, one of the key factors that Wizz Air must take into consideration is fuel efficiency. As such, the carrier decided to equip these planes with V2500 aero engines, which are known to consume less fuel, when compared to most other brands.  Once all the aircraft purchases have been completed, Wizz Air will operate an impressive fleet of around 50 aircraft.

After expanding into Ukraine, as well as Romania and Bulgaria in the past two years, Wizz Air has now set its sights on Croatia-a sun destination that once attracted almost exclusively East Central Europeans and Germans, but now appeals increasingly to westerners as well.  Jozsef Varadi, Wizz Air’s CEO,however, has yet to elaborate on precisely where the carrier plans to fly, although most observers assume that Dubrovnik and Pula may serve as possible target cities. The Hungarian-Polish airline already offers a connection between London and Zagreb.
