Wizz Air sets up operations at the Cluj Airport
Posted on: October 19th, 2007 by Lisa DavidsonWizz Air, Hungary’s discount carrier, has set up operations at the
Cluj Airport, in the heart of
Transylvania. With a population of 318,027, this is the largest city in northern
Romania and has a multiethnic population of Romanians, Hungarians and Germans. All flights from Transylvania to other destinations in Europe will soon be transferred from Tirgu Mures, where the airline has been based for the last year, to the
Cluj-Napoca International Airport. A new London-Cluj route will also be introduced in the coming weeks, with direct flights from the Transylvanian capital to
Luton Airport. Additionally, passengers traveling from the Hungarian capital, Budapest, will continue to enjoy direct routes to Transylvania, but their flights will also arrive to
Cluj-Napoca.
Wizz Air flights to and from
Transylvania serve a number of markets. While some business travelers do use these routes, the majority of passengers are leisurely travelers, who are flying from Hungary to visit family in the parts of
Romania with significant Hungarian minorities. Local Transylvanians, on the other hand, enjoy having an alternative to Romania’s main airports in
Bucharest when flying to other cities in the EU.
Wizz Air chief Jozsef Varadi observed that a series of major problems at the
Tirgu Mures Airport is the reason that the carrier decided to move operations to Cluj. Low visibility caused by poor weather during the summer months resulted in frequent delays and the airport seemed unable to improve visibility in the area. Varadi believes that Cluj’s airport is better equipped to deal with such situations.
In an effort to entice customers to travel to the Cluj, Wizz Air is offering a major discount on the first 10,000 tickets sold. All-inclusive airfare from
Budapest to Cluj now start at only £11 each way.
