Wizz Air to launch new base in Romania
Posted on: August 18th, 2008 by Doug SmithHungarian discount carrier Wizz Air has decided to establish a new base in Timisoara, a major town located in Romania’s Transylvania region. If everything goes according to plan, the new Timisoara base would be Wizz Air’s tenth in Europe, while its two main hubs are in Budapest Hungary) and Katowice (Poland). Wizz Air’s newest Transylvanian base is scheduled to open in March 2009.
Wizz Air has decided to station three of its Airbus A-320 planes at the Timisoara Airport and the carrier will also provide jobs to 100 locals at its new base. The creation of this Romanian operational base is expected to cost close to €100 million. Wizz Air will offer flights from Timisoara to popular European holiday destinations, including to Milan, Venice, Barcelona and Valencia. The carrier also intends to fly from the Transylvanian town to Paris twice per week. If the initial launch of the Timisoara base proves successful next spring, Wizz Air will continue to expand its operations in this city by adding regularly scheduled flights to London, Dortmund and Rome.
Wizz Air already has quite a prominent presence in Romania, as it maintains bases in both Bucharest and the Transylvanian town of Cluj. Founded in 2003, Wizz Air is now East/Central Europe’s largest discount carrier, although it is still in fierce competition with SkyEurope and western giants such as easyJet and Ryanair.
