Wizz Air, the Hungarian low-cost carrier, is offering a new short-haul route between Budapest and the town of Tirgu Mures, in Transylvania. Passengers are, however, also being advised that this new route will essentially replace Wizz Air’s current flights to Cluj-Napoca, starting on May 15th, 2008. The carrier, however, is hardly pulling out of Cluj. Instead, Wizz Air has confirmed that it intends to officially inaugurate this as its eight base in the coming weeks. The regularly scheduled flight to Tirgu Mures will depart three times per week from Budapest’s Ferihegy International Airport. The airline found that over the course of the past two years, travelers from Budapest have been more inclined to fly to Tirgu Mures, rather than Cluj, even though Wizz Air is quick to point out that its Cluj-based operations have been “successful overall.”
Wizz Air, however, must now deal with passengers who have already booked seats on the soon to be cancelled Budapest to Cluj route. The airline has pointed out that it plans to contact all passengers personally in the coming days, in order to inform them of the change and offer them alternatives. The airline is, however, already selling tickets on the new Budapest to Tirgu Mures route, at the low introductory rate of 2,990 Hungarian Forints (€18). This price is fully inclusive of all taxes and is for one-way travel.
Wizz Air Hungary’s flights depart from Budapest Ferihegy Airport’s Terminal 1. The carrier is currently the largest in East/Central Europe, and operates hubs in Poland, Romania and Bulgaria. The airline has built a reputation for having a strong presence in the United Kingdom as well, connecting a range of British cities to destinations in Eastern Europe, and specifically in Poland.
