Woman held at knifepoint at car rental agency

The woman who manages the Quay Street Thrifty Car Rental outlet in Bundaberg was held at knifepoint when a couple, posing as customers, entered and demanded that she turn over all the cash in the office. After the robbers left, the woman went to the shop adjacent and called the police at around 3.30pm, local time.

Leanne Goodwin, who works in the furniture store next door to the rental car outlet, said the woman from Thrifty, who was alone in the office at the time, was quite upset when she described what had happened.

“He led her to believe he was a customer,” Goodwin said. “As soon as she turned away to get the paperwork, he pulled the knife on her.”

Goodwin added that the pair held the young woman at the point of a small knife as they rifled through both her handbag and the cash register.

Before the couple ran off, the man stole an unknown sum.

A spokeswoman for Thrifty Car Rental commented that the manager was too upset by the incident to make any comment.

The victim did provide detectives details about the hold-up, and police were looking for the pair throughout the city, including the Quay Street area, as well as the boardwalk along the river. Later, they widened the search to all areas surrounding the city’s central business district.
