World Travel Awards event organized in Newcastle
Posted on: October 10th, 2007 by Lisa DavidsonThe 2007 World Travel Awards ceremony was held in
Newcastle and the event aimed to offer distinctions to the best companies in the European tourism industry. A range of corporations, including car rental firms, hotels and airlines, made it to the top and left the evening with prestigious awards. A total of 300 people were in attendance, representing the tourism sector of some 19 countries in
Europe. Of the car hire firms to be awarded, Europcar walked away with the notable distinction of being confirmed “
Europe’s Leading Car Hire. In terms of major carriers, Lufthansa has been deemed to be the continent’s favourite business class airline, while Swiss International Air Lines, which took over after the demise of the legacy carrier, Swissair, was seen as the continent’s overall “leading” airline. In terms of lodging, the Marriot chain of hotels was conferred as the continent’s premier provider of quality accommodation. Rather fittingly, the World Travel Awards gala was organized at the
Newcastle
Marriott
Hotel
Gosforth
Park. In total, event organizers distributed 50 awards.
The fact that this major international event was hosted in Newcastle was not only beneficial for this city’s economy, but it may very well help boost the tourism sector in all of
England’s North East. While traditionally this part of the country has seen fewer tourists than areas in the south, many analysts believe that the region is turning into an increasingly popular destination, not only for Britons looking for domestic travel, but also for foreign tourists. One of the North East’s major attractions is the countryside, while
Newcastle itself is increasingly developing a trendy, urban edge.
