XL failure leads to package holiday price rise
Posted on: September 25th, 2008 by Martin FellowesPrices for some package holidays have risen by eight per cent, on average, since the collapse earlier this month of XL, which was the third-largest tour operator in Britain.
Holiday packages that have increased most considerably in price since the XL failure include autumn deals to destinations in southern Europe, and northern Africa – as well as several mid-haul locations.
The collapse of XL left nearly 90,000 holidaymakers stranded abroad, and made it necessary for 200,000 more to re-book future holidays.
Price comparison website, travel.co.uk, indicates that the price of holiday packages now, as compared to the deals available before the XL failure, is higher by as much as 18 per cent.
What this means to UK travellers is the addition of hundreds of pounds to the cost of their foreign holiday, based on a family of four looking to get away by the end of October.
The website also provides details of breaks to eight destinations in the sun for both late September and October, showing price increases of eight per cent, on average.
Hays Travel spokeswoman Caroline Hays noted: “Inevitably the tour operators have put prices up since the XL crash.
She added: “We have had to pass on those tour operators’ prices. All of our customers have re-booked alternative holidays that suit their budgets.”
