Young drivers more at risk from modern gadgets
Posted on: November 23rd, 2009 by Robert BergersonAs the world evolves around us today and there are more an more gadgets or toys for boys that come on to the market for us all to fiddle with, it is having an affect on our driving skills. The younger drivers especially are being driven to distraction by the latest gizmos. . There are many insurance and police reports out there where a simple thing like turning the air-conditioning off has led to an accident. The radio and mobile phone has also been a major force diverting our attention from the road in front, but in recent years we have seen new toys come on the market. Our radios can now be mini DVD players, our mobile phones give us access to the internet and this is just the start of things to come.
Latest research by the RAC has shown that 17-24-year-olds were by far the worst offenders when it came to being distracted by gadgets. They are currently at that age where all these latest innovations are being brought into play. Amazingly 55 per cent of this age group said that had been severely distracted while behind the wheel. New laws in the UK mean it is illegal to use your mobile phone while being in control of a car. Now why it is not technically illegal to change your radio station or play with controls in your car a police person could charge you with ‘driving without due car and attention’. So a gentle reminder would be for all of us, not just youngsters, to take proper care when driving and leave gadgets until you are stationary.
