Younger holidaymakers from the UK are helping Spain’s recent downturn in visitor numbers, according to a new study.
Overall, UK bookings to Spain have declined by 23.4 per cent this year, but a recent study of 20,000 bookings, conducted by The Co-operative Travel, has shown the downturn trend is being reversed by younger travellers.
The number one package holiday destination in Spain for UK travellers is Majorca, which has seen a recent rise in bookings in the under-30 age group.
Comparing the top 10 destinations from the UK, Majorca’s bookings share rose by up to five per cent in the under-21 age group (up to 22 per cent from 17 per cent of package holidays) and three per cent in the 21-30 year age group (up to 20 per cent from 17).
Ibiza saw a rise in bookings share as well, of four per cent in the under-30 age group, up to 11 per cent from seven per cent of package holidays.
Spanish resorts are not doing so well, however, with older travellers. Majorca’s bookings share is down by two to three per cent with holidaymakers of all other ages.
For this summer, the research is showing that Majorca remains the top holiday choice, representing nearly one-fourth of all package holiday bookings considering the top 10 destinations. Dalaman in Turkey, came in second, with 15 per cent of all bookings.
