Zoom adds US-UK routes
Posted on: December 20th, 2007 by Samantha WilliamsZoom Airlines, the Canadian discount carrier, has announced that it will be adding two new routes from cities in the United States to London, UK. Starting in May 2008, Zoom will offer regularly scheduled flights from London Gatwick to Fort Lauderdale Florida) and non-stop routes from the British capital to San Diego (California). For over a decade, it has not been possible to fly direct from Fort Lauderdale to any city in Europe, a fact that makes Zoom’s entry into this market even more important. John Boyle, Zoom’s owner, noted that his carrier was developing into the most prominent discount airline to offer transatlantic flights. Hugh observed that more than 200,000 British citizens travel to Fort Lauderdale each year for their holidays and that these new routes aim to meet the needs of these travelers. As such, Zoom will fill what appears to be a real demand in the discount, leisurely travel industry.
The London to San Diego route is expected to become operational in June 2008. Thus far, San Diego has had to live with the negative status of being the largest US city without any direct flights to destinations in Europe. This has meant than over 80,000 people from San Diego each year have been forced to catch connecting flights in other cities, especially in Houston and Dallas, and even as far away as Atlanta.
Zoom Airlines was established in 2002 and is based at Toronto’s Pearson International Airport. In the UK, Zoom operates secondary hubs at Gatwick, Belfast, Glasgow and Cardiff airports. The carrier offers regular economy, as well as “premium economy” service on all routes.
