Zoom Airlines, a discount carrier based in Canada offering regularly scheduled flights between key airports in North America and the United Kingdom, as well as in Continental Europe, is taking action to reduce its carbon emissions and decrease the negative effect that its business has on the environment. One of the most important contributors to this policy is the type of the engines used to fly its fleet of Boeing 767-300ER planes. These engines are manufactured by General Electric and are known as the CF6. What makes these engines different from most other brands is that they emit much less carbon, thanks to their high level of fuel efficiency.
Zoom has also taken other steps to reduce its negative impact on the environment, such as configuring aircraft cabins in such a way as to carry the largest possible number of passengers at a time and more effectively use space aboard these planes. As part of this policy, Zoom offers only two classes of service, namely regular economy and premium economy, rather than first and business class. This means that all space is used effectively and as such, carbon emissions are about 20% lower per passenger than on legacy carriers.
Zoom also noted that reducing carbon emissions is hardly the only way to make air travel greener. Zoom, for example, recycles all paper, cans and food packaging used during flight, drinks tumblers are now made from corn starch and not plastic, while cutlery will also soon be manufactured from sugar beet and cane. By doing this, Zoom hopes to become a true trailblazer when it comes to a more environmentally-approach to air travel and a responsible corporate attitude to the planet.
